The TOI was an establishment newspaper and must've been terribly unhappy that the Brits left. :-) The paper was prices at 2 annas? Wow. The ad on the top left- who the heck bought carpets and furs in Bombay? [Sinatra film playing at the Metro. How the mighty theatre has fallen now.] Thanks for this, RBSI.

TOI's b*tt-kissing of the Establishment (even the one that was leaving!!!)was pretty much in evidence even back then!! Still. Wonderful post. Very senti-making!

please please put up a high res one na! there are people who still think that we are US of A's ex colony. :P

It is not possible to post a hi-res image on FB. I could always send a pdf by email if anyone is seriously interested. My email-id mentioned above.

Nice cover page. How about a blog on Wordpress where you can post hi-res images as well? Arun: In the mid 1970s, The Hindu was 40 paise and Chandamama 90 paise :-).

This is fantastic, would love to have it framed on my wall !!

i have seen this copy framed and on a wall!

When we turned 50 years old (1997)I remember all news papers took out front pages dating back to 15 August 1947!! and we had a copy lying in our car, this copy was circulated by evening news New Delhi and other pages were reporting Roits in Lodhi colony Ali Gunj area on 15 August 1947...reading inner pages was very scarry...

I am one of the fortunate person to have a copy of this print!!
