You are right Abhed Kiran Ravikumar-Pillai Kandamath. This is more like 7th - 9th century AD.

I think Ganpati make a very interesting image made by indians. A elephant head on a man's body - metaphorically speaking put the head of a giant size head of a big animal on a man's body. More likely a sculputre by a very imaginative sculptor and when the rest of the world saw it they started worshipping the excellent sculpture called Ganpati
