Bund of the Lake Rajasamundra, Oodeypore - 1847

This is plate 12 from James Fergusson's book, 'Ancient Architecture in Hindoostan'. Set in a valley and surrounded by lakes, Udaipur is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful cities in India. The large artificial lake of Rajsamand was built in Rajasthan, just north of Udaipur, by Raj Singh in 1660. It has a massive masonry bund (or embankment) decorated with arches and pavilions and white marble steps that go down to the lake.

Went there when I was about seven years old! There are also massive marble elephants on the embankment if I remember correctly.

Thanks to such brilliant illustrations, one gets a glimpse of these marvels as they stood in that century.
