'On the Hansi Road - near Delhi'. Worked up from an earlier sketch by R. Maclagan - 1843

Pen and ink drawing by Frederic Peter Layard (1818-1891) after an earlier sketch by R. Maclagan of the Engineers, of the Hansi Road near Delhi in Haryana, dated October 1843. The image is inscribed 'On the Hansi Road - near Delhi. Elehd (?) F.P. Layard, nr. Bahawulpoor. Octr. 1843. Sketched R. Maclagan. Engrs'. Hansi, founded in the 8th century was the ancient capital of Haryana. Deserted due to a famine in 1783 the town enjoyed a resurgence when it became the headquarters of the adventurer George Thomas and was held by the British from the following year.
