Jain temple at Sonagiri near Dattia - 1880

Photograph with a view of the Jaina temples at Sonagiri near Datia in Madhya Pradesh, taken by Deen Dayal in the 1880s, part of the Bellew Collection of Architectural Views. The gentle hills of Sonagiri are the site of dozens of Jaina temples, the building of which started in about the early 14th century. The site is particularly renowned for the black stone sculpture of the Jaina saint Chandraprabha.

Such a clear print ! Hats off to the photographer Mr. Deen Dayal

The place looks much better than it is now, with the awful marble steps. Whatever happened to Jain austerity?
