Tibetan Buddhists know Tara as "The Faithful One", "The Fierce Protectress", an archetype of inner wisdom. They speak of a transformation of consciousness, a journey to freedom. They teach many simple and direct means for each person to discover within themselves the wisdom, compassion and glory that is Tara. She is the feminine counterpart of the bodhisattva (Buddha-to-be—Avalokitesvara). According to popular belief, she came into existence from a tear of Avalokitesvara, which fell to the ground and formed a lake. Out of its waters rose up a lotus, which, on opening, revealed the goddess. Like Avalokitesvara, she is a compassionate deity who helps souls 'cross to the other shore'. She is the protectress of navigation and earthly travel, as well as of spiritual travel along the path to Enlightenment.

What a treasured post for me!!! Not only is Tara a powerful presence in my life, but I am unfamiliar with sragdhara meter (at least by name and definition) and am now on my way to reading this text: MATH FOR POETS http://www.sju.edu/~rhall/mathforpoets.pdf

was always interested in Tara.she is part of Jain pantheon too. would like ask the knowledgeable if Tara was a tribal/folk god appropriated by these mainstream religions.saw many iconographic representations.

Tara is actually the generic name for female Bodhisattava and Tibetan (tantric) Bhuddism recognizes 21 Taras. It seems she was introduced as a 'woman flavour' which is an essential element in Tantric way of worship. In tantrism a female diety helps in dispelling physical and metaphysical fears to reach the goal.
