Advertisement for J. Balchin, Tobacconist & Grocers - 1892

This piece of paper is probably a tobacco wrapper rather than a tradecard or leaflet, and is advertising J. Balchin's tobacco and grocery store. The 19th century tobacconist depended on the casual passer-by for their custom so their stores were always interestingly decorated with the tins and packets of tobacco arranged imaginatively in windows and next to the counter. The tobacconist would blend his own mixtures of tobacco and snuff and give them appealing names like Masulipatam or Patchouli.
