Family trees of ancient musical clans tell many stories - of politics, society, culture and dynasties that flourished and collapsed. With little documentiaton of these stories, all we can rely on are the dusty geneologies in the homes of the musicians.

The family tree of classical singer Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan is so full of branches, stems, stalks that it could leave your crosseyed trying to trail a line. But then if Alaudin Khilji himself dragged your ancestor from the Deccan to Delhi to be able to listen to him sing everyday, you owe it to your clan to keep track of the twists and turns.
